Letter from Italy

Sunday July 11th. Viterbo (Near Rome), Italy.

Another successful weekend here in Italy. My teammate Giuseppe Bracci won his second race of the year -the 38th Tropheo Salvatore Morucci International. He and 4 others broke away 30km into the 147km event, and held a steady gap over the dwindling chase group that found Mirko Biondi and myself in the role of protecting the breakaway group. Three laps over the San Martino in Cimino climb, including the 20% grade finishing pitch area -promising an exciting finale, and Bracci did not fail to please.

He launched his final assault on the penultimate lap, on the steep pitch leading over the finish area. He steadily increased his lead over the shattered breakaway group. Davide Fonfoni and Daniele De Nobile (Caffe Lunik - Cantina Tollo) tried to match his pace, but over the remaining 1km of the climb, could only limit their losses. They lost more time to the SC Reda rider in the final 15km -on the twisting descent that brought the riders once again to the base of the 6km Cimino hill, and as the road once again rose towards the finish. At the end "Peppe" was 51 seconds clear.

In the chase group, Biondi and I kept things in check, and on the final lap, we served ourselves to some top ten placings as well, with a bit of work on the climb. Biondi would catch a few of the straggling riders from the break to take 4th place, and I overcame a crash in a tight section of cobbles at 14km to go to take 8th (two minutes and change behind Bracci).

Next weekend, we're off to a UCI 1.5 event near Milan on Saturday. It'll give us a taste of how the European Pros handle their trade, and surely put in line any delusions of greatness that these latest successes may have have had on the Team. Sunday's race is the classic Bassano-Montegrappa. SC REDA has won the event both times we were in attendance. -hopefully we won't break that tradition.

I was driving the lead car for the Men's Road Race, which was probably the best seat in the house to watch this epic road race, which took place onJuly 12, 1999 in the Sunny Seaside town of White Rock, B.C. The 130 km men's race is scenic along the waterfront, punctuated by 2 sharp climbs per lap at each end of the course.

Immediately from the start, a break went off the front containing Alistair Howard of Team Acheson from Vancouver Island and Adam Livingston from the U.S. Team, Nutra Fig. After approximately 45 km, Alistair was slowing on the hills and Livingston picked up the pace for a solo effort by himself.

In the peleton, Livingston's team mate, Ron Schmeer flatted, and after getting a wheel change, caught the peleton and then rode passed the peleton to bridge up to his team mate Livingston. On Schmeer's wheel was Scott Goguen of Volkswagen Trek.

Goguen, Livingston and Schmeer continued to stay away, with Goguen careful to do very little work in the break. Many laps later, the break was caught by a chase group of about 6 riders containing 3 more Nutra Fig riders, Jesse Keefer of Volkswagen/Trek, and Bryce McCallum of Campione amongst others.

Once the break was caught by the chase group. Livingston picked up the pace,shattering the group, with Livingston and Keefer off of the front. This didn't last long with a regrouping taking place containing 4 Nutra Fig ridersand Bryce McCallum.

With just over a lap to go, Luca Segato of Nutra Fig attacked, with the other3 Nutra Fig riders letting McCallum chase down Luca. After McCallum started to fade from his efforts, Ron Schmeer of Nutra Fig attacked, leaving McCallum and 2 other Nutra Fig riders.

On the last climb, Segato was still in first with a sizeable lead. Schmeer had a solid hold on second, with McCallum gapping the remaining 2 Nutra Fig riders, with whom he was fighting for 3rd place. On the finishing straight, Aaron Olsen of Nutra Fig was able to pass McCallum.
