Report and results from Escape Velocity's dEVo Spring Series Weekend #4

Saturday March 27th: Atomic

Results

Clear skies and balmy temperatures greeted racers for the sixth race of the dEVo Spring Series.  The 2009 BC Provincial Road Championship circuit is arguably the most difficult of any Spring Series course with steep “bergs,” false flats, and swirling winds.

The C race was animated with a five-rider break containing enough horsepower to stave off the main pack.  The sprint up the steep 200m climb to the finish was taken by Jin Kim of Team Coastal over teammate Kerry White and Andrea Taylor.  Rounding out the top five were new race Bevan Moss and big-gear-grinder Stuart Lynne (Escape Velocity).

All eyes were on Team Coastal as they have been the dominant force in the B group so far this year.  They did not disappoint, with David Stephens making a huge solo effort with two laps to go and taking the win.  The bunch gallop behind was taken by Stephens’ teammates Kyle Buckosky and Scott Inman.  Escape Velocity member and dEVo father of two John Livingstone took fourth over another Escape Velocity member and ex-national junior champion Jeffrey Werner.

The A race once again was dominated by a familiar formula, with an early move represented by all major teams going the distance.  This time the break was dominated by Total Restoration with four members in the break (Jamie Sparling, Marcel Aarden, Cyrus Kangarloo, Chris de Vries).  Also in attendance were Garneau Evolution’s Tim Abercrombie and Mike Sidic (H&R Block).  With Aarden flatting out of the break and Sidic falling off the pace, it was three-on-one with the odds stacked against Abercrombie.  This didn’t seem to bother Abercrombie in the slightest as he was able to outfox and overpower the opposition to convincingly take the win over Kangarloo, Sparling, de Vries.  Sidic rolled in for a character-building 5th place.

Sunday March 28th: Aldergrove Lake Classic

Results

It was a genuine “Belgian” day on Sunday for the kermesse-style 7km traditional loop around Aldergrove Lake Park as periods of heavy rain dominated the day.

The novice group made a return for a five lap, 35km race.  Taking the solo win was Clete Purcell of Team Wedgewood over Cam Clark, Benjamin Low-Beer, Andrea Rodgers (Glotman Simpson), and Ron Wright (Local Ride).  Almost every racer was competing for the first time in a road race, so congratulations!

The C group came down to a reduced-pack sprint up the 100m riser to the finish with Kalle Karu taking the win over junior Jasmin Glaesser (Cycling BC), and Dave Richardson.  Ryan Golbeck of Mighty Riders and Brian Coote of Daryl Evans racing rounded out the top five.

Perhaps the most hotly contested race was the B group, with many strong clubs looking to end the dominance of Team Coastal.  A strong solo move was made by Phoenix Velo’s Graham Laurie for three laps, but it was nullified by the well-oiled Team Coastal.  In the end it was a crushing and decisive move at the bottom of the final climb by Local Ride’s Richard Machhein that took the win over Laurie, with Kyle Buckosky (Team Coastal) once again showing up on the podium.  Jeffrey Werner (Escape Velocity) and Bart Ludbrook (Glotman Simpson) rounded out the top five.

The A race was once again animated by an early move that stuck with the main group actually getting lapped and pulled by three leaders Dylan Sebel (Team Coastal), Marcel Aarden (Total Restoration) and Jason Thompson (Garneau Evolution).  The three worked well together until the final lap where Thompson capped off a fantastic weekend for the Garneau Evolution team with a solo win over Sebel.  Jamie Sparling (Total Restoration) came in third after  chasing the lead three for over 5 laps and coming within a minute but no closer.  David Gerth (Garneau Evolution) and John Perkins (Glotman Simpson) rounded out the top five.

Once again a big thank you goes out to all the volunteers who made racing possible this weekend.  A big thank you also goes out to our fantastic club sponsors who make our kits, feed us, fix our bikes, host great bike rides, give us race prizes, fix aching bodies, and test physiological output!
