Mount Washington Alpine Resort hosts the Kokanee DH and XC races this weekend as part of the 2010 BC Cup.  The province’s best up and coming downhill and cross-country racers will be on hand along with buttery-smooth announcer Brett Tippie!  As an added bonus, for the second year in a row, it looks like the weather will be picture perfect.

“The weather forecast is bluebird,” explains Race Director Mike Manara.  “And the Monster Mile is now clear of snow, which downhill racers will be happy to hear, plus we have a new section on our XC loop for Cross Country racers.”

The first day of competition is on Saturday, July 31.  XC racers will test their endurance and leg strength on Mount Washington’s new 7.3km XC loop.  The new loop brings racers as far east on the mountain as the Sunrise Chair.  The cross-country races beginning Saturday morning at 10am.

Day two of the BC Cup on Sunday, August 1 features downhill at its finest on the infamous Monster Mile.  Until just recently, the Mile was still covered in snow on the mountain’s upper elevations.  The trail is widely acknowledged as one of the toughest downhills in Canada.  Great sightlines for spectators exist on the lower third of the course with a tabletop jump highlighting the finish area in front of the Alpine Lodge.  The DH races begin at 1:30pm on Sunday.

The BC Cup at Mount Washington isn’t a race held exclusively for riders on the BC Cup circuit.  Citizen class categories are available for riders who want to compete for fun.  For complete registration information for all categories, visit cyclingbc.net.

If you’re not the racing type but want to check out the action up close, then volunteering is the best way to do it!  Mount Washington is looking for volunteers to help the races run smoothly and safely.  No previous bike race experience is necessary.  Perks include FREE bike park or winter day tickets, FREE food, and all the fresh air you can handle!  To become a volunteer please email events@mountwashington.ca.

For all race information including course maps, racing costs, schedules, and everything you need to know for a weekend of great racing, surf to Mount Washington’s BC Cup website via a front-page link at mountwashington.ca.

The BC Cup at Mount Washington is supported by: Kokanee, Rocky Mountain, Maxxis, Lambert, Ryders Eyewear, Dasani, Powerade, Vitamin Water, Kali Protectives, The Riding Fool Hostel, UROC, and Chek News.  Events like this wouldn’t be successful without the support of Vancouver Island bike shops like Dodge City Cycles, Mountain City Cycle, Arrowsmith Bikes, Ozzie’s, and Trail Bikes.
