The Canadian cycling competition season is in full swing heading into July, and the Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) and UCI Trade Teams are preparing to perform at their best during the upcoming 2011 IMMUNITY-FX Canadian Road Cycling Championships powered by Canaccord Wealth Management, held in the greater Toronto area from June 24 to July 3, 201.

Team SpiderTech, Canada’s only UCI Pro-continental Team, is doing very well, showing great results while racing around the world in major cycling events. So far this season, members of the SpiderTech team have won prestigious jerseys, such as the King of the Mountain (KOM) at the AGMEN Tour of California, the Sprint and KOM jerseys at the classic Tro Bron Leon, the Sprint jersey at the GP de Denain, and the KOM jersey at the Giro Di Sardegna. Captain Svein Tuft recently captured 2 Stage wins for SpiderTech at the Tour de Beauce, their first-ever victories.

“The CCA trade Team status was instrumental in our progress to become a UCI Pro-continental team. The status significantly helped us to access more important races, notably, and cumulate precious UCI points for the upgrade to a pro-continental status,” said Josée Larocque, team manager for Team SpiderTech powered by C10, the only Canadian-registered UCI Pro-continental team. “We are now closer than ever to our goal of racing consistently on the UCI World Tour, including the Tour de France.”

In addition to these jerseys, the team were recognized with a few more accolades such as the most aggressive riders at GP de Denain, the Presidential Tour of Turkey and Circuit de la Sarthe stage races.

On the women’s front, Juvéderm-Specialized also had successes around the world. Canada’s only UCI Professional women’s cycling team, Juvéderm-Specialized has started out the season extremely well, showing many great results.

Denise Ramsden is the current leader as Best Young Rider of the NRC Prestige Series and won the General classification at the Killington Stage Race. Lex Albrecht took the top honours at the Battenkill road race and best young rider, as well as best young rider at the Tour of the Gila and Queen of the Mountain at the Liberty Classic. In addition to these accomplishments, Veronique Labonté finished third of the overall General Classification and won the sprint jersey at the Killington Stage Race

“I cannot say enough about the support of the Canadian Cycling Association. Matt, Denise and Vincent have gone out of their way to support our plans - especially with our pending trip to Europe in July and August. Whether it was allowing us to use “Canada House” or facilitating us getting in races, they have been great. It was our status as a Trade Team that has catalyzed our ability to race at the highest level,” said Maclom Eade, team director for Team Juvéderm-Specialized.

In addition to these accomplishments, there have been many team podiums in regional and provincial races including, many from Sara Byers, the current leader in the Ontario Cup.

“So often, talented Canadian Women are not given the opportunity to race and perform at the top of the sport, so we really never find out what the talent pool is in Canada. I think our first half performance as a team has proven that young and unrecognized talent can rise to the top of the sport. We, management and sponsors, could not be more proud.”

In addition to these UCI-registered teams, the Canadian Cycling Association has four national Trade Teams: Stevens Racing p/b The Cyclery, Planet Energy p/b SpiderTech Jr Team, Garneau-Club Chaussure-Norton Rose, and Team H&R Block.

The competing teams will be vying for the opportunity to have one of their riders win the coveted maple leaf jersey, and wear it proudly racing around the world. In addition to trade teams, provincial cycling association will be registering athletes to the 2011 IMMUNITY-FX Canadian Road Championships powered by Canaccord Wealth Management, as well as independent cyclists.
