May 26/12 14:59 pm - Canada Qualifies Olympic BMX Spot

Posted by Editor on 05/26/12

Unofficially, it looks like Canada has qualified one spot for the Men's BMX competition at the Olympic Games. As we explained earlier in the week, Canada was on the bubble for an Olympic spot after Tory Nyhaug crashed at the World Cup Final in Papendale, Netherlands a few weeks ago (see Daily News - Tory Nyhaug to Miss BMX Worlds, Possible Loss of Canadian Olympic Spot).

This meant that to retain a top-11 nations ranking and qualify a spot, Canada had to wait and see how their rivals performed at the world championships in Birmingham, Great Britain. Since neither Argentina nor Ecuador made it through qualifying today, Canada cannot be mathematically overtaken in the rankings.

It should be noted that this is, of course, unofficial until the UCI releases official rankings in early June.
