Road Nationals

I attended a press conference in Peterborough yesterday, to formally launch the 2000 Road Nationals. The plans by Intersport are ambitious. The 13.2 kilometre road circuit includes a portion through the east end of the city, and the criterium is run through the downtown area.

The Senior men will do 17 laps - 224.4 kilometres. The Senior women race 118.8 kilometres (9 laps). The length of the men's race, according to Pierre Hutsebaut of the CCA, is in response to the wishes of the top riders. "They asked for the longest race possible, to prepare for the Olympics." He said that the course is not particularly difficult (eg, no major climb), but that "the riders will have to take the initiative to make the race happen. There will be selection because there are 8 riders looking for 4 (Olympic) spots."

I also spoke with Jay Morton of Intersport about their proposed sports complex, which includes a covered velodrome. The project is progressing, with the main holdup at this point being the myriad layers of planning permissions required. A groundbreaking did take place last week, as they began to lay out the road system. "We can't do much until we pass all the planning permissions, but we are starting to lay things out, and are still on schedule to have the velodrome operational by 2002."

MTB Worlds Team

Now that the spring mountain bike World Cup series has concluded, the CCA has made their selection for the Worlds in Spain (June 5-11). The selection is for the Elite Men, Espoir Men and Elite Women Cross-country team. The Juniors and Downhill squads will be chosen immediately after Canada Cup DH#1 (Camp Fortune) and XC#!/DH#2 (Hardwood Hills).

BC High School Mountain Bike Championships
(courtesy Joan Kyle-Jones)

The third annual BC High School Mountain Bike Championships was held at the Hartland Mountain Bike Park in Victoria on Sunday, May 14th. Sixty-two BC junior and senior secondary schools participated, with 390 students registered to race. The Lower Vancouver Island Secondary School Cycling League hosted the event. Even though this was the first time the Championships have been held on Vancouver Island, the Lower Island League has been active in High School cycling for nearly 12 years, putting on a 5-event bike race series for secondary students each Spring. Sunday's
Championships event culminated with the wonderful news from Sam Scorda of the North Shore League in Vancouver that cycling is now an official, sanctioned high school sport in BC schools. Sam and others in Vancouver have worked very hard to make this happen, and it opens the way for even greater youth participation and development in cycling in BC.

The top riders in each category are listed below. Full results can be found at the Lower Vancouver Island Secondary School Cycling League web site: www.smus.bc.ca/cyclingleague/bcchamps2000/results
