The Town of Milton invites the community to gear up for the Games

The Town of Milton welcomes all members of the public to help kick off the one year countdown to the TORONTO 2015 Pan Am/Parapan Am Games with a cycling-themed celebration on Saturday, July 12, 2014.

The event takes place between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. at Milton Community Park, just south of the Milton Sports Centre on Santa Maria Boulevard. Opening ceremonies begin at 10 a.m. with greetings from Mayor Gord Krantz and special guest Curt Harnett, Olympian, Canadian Sports Hall of Fame and Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame inductee and Chef de Mission for Team Canada at the 2015 Pan Am Games.

“The Town of Milton is honoured to be a host community of the Games, which are now just a short year away,” said Milton Mayor Gord Krantz. “I encourage all members of the community to attend the one year countdown as we look forward to welcoming athletes, spectators and visitors to our outstanding community.”

Attendees are invited to participate in a “Keep the Bikes Spinning” Challenge with Curt Harnett from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., with the goal of keeping stationary bikes spinning non-stop for five hours. The day’s activities will also include a free barbecue from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., meet-and-greet with PACHI, mascot for the Pan Am/Parapan Am Games from 10 to 11:30 a.m., baseball and soccer games/activities, Parapan Am sports demonstrations (basketball, cycling, rugby), Sports Village (including cycling representatives), family Zumba and more. Enjoy entertainment throughout the day, including a hand drumming workshop with Tom McLelland from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m., live music with 2 Dollar Bills from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m., Learn to Dance from 1:15 to 1:30 p.m. and Batata, featuring The Dance Class, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m.

Milton Transit will be providing free shuttle service from the south entrance of the Sports Centre to the park, between 9:45 a.m. and 3:45 p.m. The rain location will be at the Milton Sports Centre, 605 Santa Maria Blvd. Special thanks also go out to event sponsors Real Canadian Superstore, Cisco, CIBC and Coca-Cola.

During the Games, the Cisco Milton Pan Am/Parapan Am Velodrome will host athletes as they compete for cycling gold. Outside of the Games, the facility will be known as the Mattamy National Cycling Centre.
