Registration is now open for the inaugural Ottawa Sport Council webinar series - February and March 2015.

Hosted by the Ottawa Sport Council, the webinar series has been created based on feedback from local sport organizations. The webinars provide an opportunity for community sporting organizations to increase their knowledge in areas such as athlete nutrition, legal issues, social media tips and the how and why to host successful local sporting events.

Join us at NOON on the following dates to learn from experts in their fields:

March 11 - Topic: Bidding and Hosting Sport Events 101

Speaker: Jason Robinson, Sport Law and Strategy Group

Are you considering hosting the next big event in your sport town or city? Hosted by Jason Robinson from the Sport Law & Strategy Group, this presentation will tackle the challenges that local clubs and organizations face when considering an event bid. Often with limited resources and a largely volunteer driven core, the prospect of hosting and submitting a bid can be daunting to a local team. The contrast in bid processes, as well as the expectations from governing bodies, also provides unique challenges for each sport. Jason will attempt to demystify the big bad bid and convince your local club not only WHY you should host an event, but also HOW you go about setting the stage for this milestone. This presentation will highlight:

• The benefits to local clubs and communities to hosting a sport event
• Why the bid is such an important step in attaining success
• Questions to ask when preparing a bid
• Critical elements to building a successful sport event bid
• Identifying what it means to be a great host

Jason will also share a case study of hosting a recent World Championships and how the bid was successful. From this webinar you will have a clearer idea of the requirements to host and how you can convince your provincial, national and/or international partners that your backyard is the perfect place to do it.

March 25 - Topic: I'm a Coach - Now What? - Understanding Your Legal Obligations

Speaker: Steven Indig, Sport Law and Strategy Group

This session will focus on the legal duty of coaches. The presenters will explain what Canadian statutes and common law say about the coach's standard of care, using case law examples. The session will discuss legal and ethical issues arising from the coach-participant relationship, and participants will learn about strategies, such as screening, to be used by organizations to ensure this duty is fulfilled. Participants will gain a better understanding of the inherent power in the coach-athlete relationship and will be better equipped to exercise this power with the utmost care. Furthermore, participants will learn about the legal requirements of screening and screening policies.

April 8 - Topic: Twitter Made Easy

Speaker: Kim Barr, Set The Barr Online Marketing

This session will focus on the best practices of Twitter - how to set up your account, find and follow other people and/or organizations, and build your follower base to build your business.
