News From Australia

Coach/Manager Kurt Innes sends in another pre-Olympic update from Australia.

Our first week in Adelaide is coming to a close and we spent this Friday night watching the Russian Olympic team perform here in Adelaide at the Russian gymnastic spectacular. These athletes are in a word, AMAZING. they are so polished and intense in everything they do. They performed their Olympic programs in a public forum, to pretty high profit from what we can gather. Almost 5000 people showed up to view these athletes in their final public performance prior to Sydney. At almost $50 per ticket the Russians were looking to make up some of their training expenses by putting on a show for the public.

The show itself was pretty cool. Throw in two pop groups, and a highwire type (ala Circque de Soleil ) act along with two shows from the Russians and you had a pretty full 2.5 hour show. The most exciting part (from my perspective) was the floor routine from the smallest of the athletes. Weighing just 35 kg (about 80 or so pounds) and just over 4 foot 8 inches this little powerhouse flipped and twisted her way around through her floor routine. Really dynamic and very precise. This was my first time ever seeing live gymnastics, so it was very neat to see the worlds best as your first experience.

Over the past 5 days we have also figured out that our hotel is more like the Titanic (a very old cruise ship) than an actual hotel. The restaurant is upstairs on the 7th floor of the hotel, overlooking the downtown of Adelaide. (beautiful view of the lit up city each evening). The furnishings and decor are totally turn of the century. Lots of old pictures, beautiful antique chairs and tables. To top it off the music played is always old big band and charleston type music (Doug you would love it ! ) .... feels like we are living in the movie "Titanic" each day we go for supper .

Both Tanya and Lori-Ann had today (Friday here in aussie) off of training. Spent the day relaxing and a bit of time downtown touring around.

The Australian team has left Adelaide to head up to another training base (in the "warmer north of Australia") . Italian endurance rider Antenalla Belutti arrived today. Training here in Adelaide are also the Russian female sprint team, and the New Zealand endurance and sprint teams. Lots of action around the track things exciting and interesting.

Other than that things are pretty much on track. We are getting ready for a big couple of days tomorrow and Sunday on the track. More race specific intervals, and efforts.

I also found out we are going to view the big footy game on Sunday from a private box ! Great news as it is supposed to be raining on Sunday.

More news tomorrow.

Kurt
