Jungels retains the Maglia Rosa

The Spanish rider Gorka Izaguirre (Movistar Team) won the 189km Molfetta-Peschici eighth stage of the 100th Giro d'Italia. The Italian Giovanni Visconti (Bahrain - Merida) and Spaniard Luis León Sanchez (Astana Pro Team), also in the breakaway, finished second and third.

Gorka Izaguirre claimed his first Grand Tour success following the path of his younger brother Ion who won stage 16 of the 2012 Giro d’Italia in Falzes. He powered to victory with one kilometre to go after Valerio Conti crashed in the ascent to Peschici overlooking the Adriatic Coast. Despite a crash earlier on, Bob Jungels retained the Maglia Rosa ahead of the gruelling hilltop finish of the Blockhaus.

Mike Woods (Cannondale-Drapac Pro Cyling Team) claimed another top 5 finishing 12 seconds back.  Woods sits 22nd in GC at 1:36 back.
