New Zealander Melissa "Meshy"Holt, of Team RONA, won the Worthington Criterium today, the fourth race in the Wendy's International Sports Festival. Tina Mayolo-Pic, of Diet Rite and Laura Van Gilder of Trek/VW finished second and third respectively. Nicole Freedman, of RONA, finished fifth.

As Nicole Freedman picked up points in the mid-race sprint, Mayolo-Pic still leads Freedman by four points in General Classification. General Classification is determined by adding points earned in each of the races.

Today's race was a 45-km criterium, being 25 laps around a 1.75-km, uphill-downhill course. Five laps into the race, Meshy Holt attacked and quickly put 15 seconds between her and the peloton. Then Laura Van Gilder and Kim Davidge (Saturn Timex) bridged to her. "Then the field started to catch up to us, recalled Holt after the race, and I had the impression that Laura and Kim were about to sit up and wait for them. So while they slowed down I accelerated.”

And away she went. Her lead increased to about 25-30 seconds and she maintained it for the remainder of the race. "Two spectators standing on a corner gave me splits just about every lap, said Holt, so I could adjust my pace.”

Holt easily won the mid-race sprint, Nicole Freedman (RONA) taking second and Emily Gloeckner (Veritas) third. And she crossed the finish line with a 30-second lead on the main field. The peloton settled their accounts with a mass sprint. Mayolo-Pic, Laura Van Gilder, Emily Gloeckner and Nicole Freedman crossed the line in that order.

"This is a tough course, said Holt about the Worthington Criterium. You have to go hard up the hill, but you have to go hard down the hill as well if you want to stay away, so there is absolutely no space for recuperation. I don't know which word applies to me now, she joked, exhausted or excited!”

Probably both.

Tomorrow, the riders will compete in the Easton Town Center Criterium, a 48-km race.

La Néo-Zélandaise Melissa “Meshy” Holt, de l'équipe RONA, a remporté aujourd'hui le Critérium Worthington, quatrième épreuve du Festival International des Sports Wendy's. Tina Mayolo-Pic, de Diet Rite et Laura Van Gilder de Trek/VW ont terminé respectivement deuxième et troisième. Nicole Freedman, de l'équipe RONA, a fini cinquième.

Comme Freedman a amassé des points au sprint de mi-course, toutefois, son retard sur Mayolo-Pic au classement général est toujours de quatre points. Le classement général est établi en additionnant les points obtenus dans chacune des épreuves.

L'épreuve d'aujourd'hui était un criterium de 45 kilomètres, soit 25 tours d'un circuit de 1,75 km sur lequel une montée était suivie d'une descente. Au cinquième tour, Meshy Holt a attaqué et a rapidement creusé un écart de 15 secondes. Puis Laura Van Gilder et Kim Davidge (Saturn Timex) l'ont rejointe. "Le peloton s'est mis à reprendre du terrain, rappelait Holt après la course, et j'avais l'impression que Laura et Kim allaient se relever et l'attendre. Alors quand j'ai senti qu'elles ralentissaient, j'ai accéléré.".

Et elle disparut. Son avance augmenta jusqu'à osciller entre 25 et 30 secondes, et Holt la maintint jusqu'à la fin de la course. "Deux spectateurs qui se tenaient sur un coin de rue me criaient les écarts à presque chacun de mes passages, a raconté Holt, alors je pouvait ajuster mon rythme."

Holt a facilement remporté le sprint de mi-course, sa coéquipière de RONA Nicole Freedman se plaçant deuxième, devant Emily Gloeckner (Veritas). Et elle franchit la ligne d'arrivée avec une trentaine de secondes d'avance sur le peloton. Celui-ci régla ses comptes dans un sprint massif remporté par Mayolo-Pic, suivie par Laura Van Gilder, Emily Gloeckner et Nicole Freedman dans cet ordre.

"C'est un parcours difficile, disait Holt au sujet du Critérium Worthington. On doit grimper à fond de train, mais on doit aussi descendre à fond de train si on veut rester devant. Alors il n'y a absolument pas de place pour la récupération. Je ne sais pas si je suis excitée ou épuisée!"

Les deux, sans doute…
