Mississauga Mid-Week Series (courtesy Peter McCaffrey)

This week' race, the second in our season-long series, was held in glorious spring weather. The mercury was at 20 degrees with a cooling south west breeze. 47 riders started in two groups, with the scratch first and second category riders (including a smattering of 3's and vets.) giving the rest of the field a 3 minute advantage.

A smart quartet composed of Gary Wright, Amy Jarvis and Michael Moore from Mississauga B.B. and Racer Sportif's Domenic Rigato realized that they could catch the scratch group and, with a great display of determination, managed to bridge. Few of the at 1 lapfast guysat 1 lap realized that this had happened and for the balance of the race Gary, Amy, Michael and Domenic stayed unobtrusively in the bunch. Meanwhile, numerous attempts were being made to break away until finally, Jeff (Neworld)and Matt (Jet Fuel) Hansen secured a five second lead which they held onto until the chequered flag. Jet Fuel's Joe Juliano pipped Greg Cavanagh (Woodstock) for third over the line, with Woodbridge Italia's Tom Villano 5th.

However, since Rigato, Wright, Jarvis and Moore finished in the bunch in that order, they clinched the top four placings with Jeff Hansen in fifth place. Once the 5 kilometer circuit can be used for these handicap events, this kind of situation is unlikely to repeat itself.

Of particular note was the performance of Veteran 'B' Augusto Goncalvez who rode with the scratch group and finished in 8th. place. A special Å’thank you' to Jet Fuel's Doug Pogue who retired from the event in order to video the finish.

For details of next week's event, check the Midweek Club's hot line at (905) 271-8300 any time after Friday.

Tour of Morroco

There is very, very little information available about this race. We know that there is a Canadian team in the race - and that they are 5th on Team GC after 5 stages - but nothing else. Does anyone have information on this race?
