Mandy Poitras was our lone competitor in the women's points race tonight. The field of 20 women took to the start of the 100 Lap event (25 KM) and after the first 2 sprints it became very evident that Olga Slouserava (RUS) was going to be the woman to beat. For those in the sport who know that name, you will realize that she still holds the women's flying 200 meter world record (10.831, set in 1993). Slouserava scored in 9 of the 10 sprints, winning 5 of them, and placing 2nd in 3 other sprints. Although 2 riders were able to gain a lap on the field and cash in on the brand new rule which grants riders 20 points for alap, Slouserava was still hands down the majority winner on points. This new rule has totally changed the race, as in the men's race which was won by a Great Britian rider with a huge point total over 70 points (he gained 3 laps on the field).

Mandy seemed to struggle today in the race, and after trying her legs out at the midway points sprint (lap 50) she was held at 0 points until the last sprint. In this last sprint she was able to muster up enough speed to gain 2 points (3rd across the line). Mandy has stated that her objective here is the Scratch Race, and that this Points Race would serve as a warm up event for her. The dissapointment of today will hopefully be removed with a great race tomorrow by Poitras.

Overall impression of the race was that it was it seemed a bit 'average'. With many laps at 35 -37 km /hour average speed for the first 20 laps. The fastest sprint lap maxed out at 54 km/hr in the race. The middle 40 laps the speed increased to average 42 km/hr. and Slouserava was able to dominate the race and nobody was able to match her in the sprints. NO major attacks were attempted , except for the two riders who gained a lap just after half distance.

It will be very interesting tomorrow in the women's Scratch Race where many of these same women will try and overcome the speed of Slouserava.
