Waterloo Regional Council Considers MTB Ban

Concerns over the environmental impact to soil erosion and plant damage have led the region to consider a bylaw to ban or restrict mountain bikers and other visitors to 16 regionally owned forests.

Local riders Josh Hall and Tracey Buckely have been quoted in the local newspapers in opposition to the outright ban and are asking the region to reconsider. Both claim there are better ways of dealing with the situation, but that it will require a working relationship between all users to protect usage and forest quality.

An editorial by Christian Aagaard of The Record compares the Waterloo "solution" with one the Halton Regional Conservation plan established several years ago. The plan embraced the problem of dealing with different types of usage. In Halton user fees and proper management of the 3 parks in the Milton area have actually seen use flourish.
