Winter Season Heats Up at Burnaby

Over 50 riders from across BC, Alberta, Washington, and Oregon competed at the Burnaby Velodrome for the first major race event of the winter season. Hosted under the air-supported roof at the Harry Jerome Sports Centre, Burnaby's 200M indoor track was treated by some great performances and hinted at the sign of things to come for some of Canada's best track talent. The November meet was a warm-up event for many athletes, testing their legs as their winter training begins.

In the Men's Category A races, Calgary's Ryan Mackenzie took first in the overall Omnium, with local rider Scott LaLiberte (Schwalbe) second, and Calgary's Robert Veroba (Bicisport) in third. Mackenzie took Omnium points in all events, including the Sprints, Kilo, Keirin, Scratch Race, Points Race, and Miss-n-Out, showing a great deal of versatility, speed, and endurance during the 3 days of racing.

Men's Sprint Omnium went to Edmonton's Lars Madsen (Guru), with Ryan Mackenzie and local rider Matt Chater (Schwalbe) in second and third. The Men's Endurance Omnium was won by Scott LaLiberte. Fresh from his World Masters Points Race championship win in Manchester, LaLiberte won all three of the highly competitive Men's A endurance events: the Scratch Race, Points Race, and Miss-n-Out. National Pursuit Champ Robert Veroba was second, with Ryan Mackenzie in third.

In the B Category, it was Calgary Junior Mark Macdonald (Coast Mtn Sports) taking the overall ahead of 15 year old Scott Crump (Rocky Mountain) and his older brother Shaun Crump. Macdonald, like Mackenzie in the A's, scored points across all Omnium events. Mandy Poitras (Rocky Mountain/Powerbar) won the B Endurance Omnium over Ross Harbottle and Scott Crump, with Mark Macdonald winning the B Sprint Omnium over Shaun Crump and Chris Anstey.

First-time racers also had a full weekend of race events in the C Category. Local rider Trevor McKee (Webber Naturals) won the overall title, with Naomi Cooper (Devo/Powerbar) and Mark Bohm (Campione) in second and third. Naomi Cooper, whose older brother Marsh Cooper (Symmetrics) did not race after dislocating his shoulder on Friday night while lining up for the Win-n-Out, won the overall BVC Race title of Best Woman Rider.

In the non-omnium 3000M Pursuit, Canadian National Masters TT medalist and Canadian Cycling Association Board member John Tolkamp (Escape Velocity) posted a 3:45.50 time, beating out Robert Veroba (3:47.38) and Matt Chater (3:53.79).

The last event of the race weekend was the Olympic Sprint. The crowd was treated to not one, but two winning rides by the powerhouse team of Yannik Morin, Cam McKinnon, and Travis Smith, who set the track record for the event with a blistering 41.13 ride. A timing malfunction meant that after clearly winning on their first effort, they wanted to make it official and do it again. Rene Regimbald, Zach Grant, and Ryan Mackenzie took second (43.54) and Scott LaLiberte, Carey Squires, and Matt Chater took third (43.72).

The winter track season has just started at Burnaby and will continue in two months time with the January 10-11, 2004 race weekend. Canadian and American athletes will continue to use the facility as a benchmark of their training programs as the season progresses and the drive towards the Athens 2004 Olympics continues.

The Burnaby Velodrome thanks all of its sponsors for this event for fantastic prizes and products: Clif Bar, Dizzy Chicks, Genisoy, Kicking Horse Coffee, La Bicicletta, Luna Bar, Mountain Equipment Coop, Powerbar, Rudy Project Eyewear, Shore Events, Weber Naturals. In particular a big thanks to Paul Haym (La Bicicletta), Richard Juryn (Shore Events) and Trevor McKee (Overwaitea) for their sponsorship.
