India Gets 2010 Commonwealth Games

New Delhi, India has won the right to hold the 2010 Commonwealth Games, beating out Hamilton. Voters had to choose between a technically superior bid from Hamilton (who also hosted the first Games in 1930), versus the argument from India that the most populous member of the Commonwealth has never held the Games.

There was much disappointment from the Hamilton contingent, with the Mayor of Hamilton, Bob Wade, stating that India bought the Games (he said that they had offered national Games committees $100,000 each if they voted for India).
