Canadians roll to cycling records

Canada's national cycling team pedalled its way to two track records at the Arvid Geldsetzer Memorial races during the weekend at the Glenmore Velodrome.

Doug Baron and Tanya Dubnicoff set track records in the men's and women's 200-metre events.

"We're having a phenomenal year," said the team's coach, Kurt Innes.

Baron finished the 200 metres in 10.59 seconds, beating the old record of 10.60 seconds set by Curt Harnett, who won a bronze medal at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Dubnicoff, who won two medals during 1998 World Cup action, finished in 11.32 seconds, beating her own track record of 11.4 seconds.

Innes predicted the Canadian team will be the team to beat.

"We looking [sic] at four medals," he said.

Pan-Am medal-winners will get automatic selection for Canada's team bound for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia."
