Simon Yates turns the Giro upside down
British rider conquered the Maglia Rosa where he lost it seven years ago. Chris Harper wins the queen stage.
Chris Harper (Jayco-AlUla) won his first pro race in Europe at Sestriere by attacking the the breakaway and going on a 43km solo ride. Simon Yates (Visma-Lease a Bike) powered to overall victory when he managed to go clear of race leader Isaac Del Toro (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) and runner up Richard Carapaz (EF Education-EasyPost) with 15km remaining to climb on colle delle Finestre. The Briton found his team-mate Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) in the valley as the Belgian had initiated the breakaway group for that purpose. It enabled him to take the lead of the Giro d'Italia with an advantage of 3:56 on the eve of the grand finale in Rome.
Derek Gee (Israel-Premier Tech) stayed with Del Toro finishing 11th on the stage at 7:10 back and remains in 4th at 6:23 back.
"Obviously, when you’re in fourth place, you want the podium. But I had the fourth-best legs. Those guys were well above me today, so there was nothing I could do. I'm just happy to be here, in this position – especially when you consider the time lost at the start of the race,” Gee said after the finish.
