UCI Establishes UCI Academy

The International Cycling Union (UCI) announced today from Aigle, Switzerland and London that it has established the "UCI Academy" in partnership with IF Education.

The UCI has recognised the need to provide educational opportunities for those involved in cycling. Over the next 12 - 18 months this Academy will introduce a stimulating and effective method of education designed for the global cycling community. Specific courses will be available for athletes as well as for Sport and Major Event Executives. All executive courses will be produced in conjunction with Manchester Business School at the University of Manchester.

UCI currently has Member Federations in over one hundred and sixty nations and the UCI Academy services will become another means to fulfilling the UCI mission of 'promoting cycling in every country throughout the world and at every level'.

Committed personally to this new initiative in world cycling, the President of the UCI, Mr Pat McQuaid said yesterday that "many athletes are exposed to constant travel for training and competition purposes. The UCI Academy will assist them to continue their studies whilst maintaining the highest quality of their training, helping to ensure a holistic approach to their personal and career development."

"The UCI Academy will enable us to put in place the resources required to invest in our greatest asset, our athletes. It will provide these athletes with the essential skills to move easily into their chosen career when they retire from competition."

All Executive Courses for officials, event organisers and sports executives will be provided by the Manchester Business School, which is recognised as one of the premier Business Schools in Europe. Since its formation in 1965, Manchester Business School has become an internationally recognised centre of excellence for management studies. It is renowned for its pioneering hands on approach to learning and the project-based Manchester Method. Manchester Business School is one of the world's top 15 Business Schools for providing executive education programmes to many world leading organisations.

The Director of Regional and Economic Affairs at Manchester University, Mr Peter Fell, noted the positive synergy that the UCI Academy would foster between sport and education and the beneficial value that would flow from bringing together many cultures in the development of cycling-specific education. He also stressed the value and importance of joining forces with such a prestigious international body as the UCI.

He added "Manchester has a strong association with cycling not least because the British National Cycling Centre is located here, at Sport City and I believe that our partnership with the UCI will provide an opportunity which can only be good for both the sport of cycling globally and our University as an international provider of high quality tertiary education".
