Baie-St-Paul Quebec Cup DEVINCI - A Success Despite the Weather!

Following the success of the Quebec Road Cup GP de Charlevoix the June 3-4 weekend, The Club Cycliste de Charlevoix and its partners welcomed the Cross-Country cycling Quebec Cup DEVINCI June 10th and 11th.

Quebec Cup DEVINCI was an internationally sanctionned cross-country race - meaning that the race is included in the Canadian Mountain Bike circuit. For many athletes, it was a key opportunity to gather points in order to qualify for the Canadian National Team, while for others it meant another fantastic stage in the Quebec Cup of mountain biking.

Without the coopoeration of the weather, but with the help of many a studded tire, the course was set at the Centre 4 Saisons Le Genévrier. Inclement weather provided athletes with the opportunity to test their endurance and strength, with some racers coming in after more than 2 hours and 30 minutes of riding.

Benoît Simard of Team Specialized, a local from the Quebec region, won top honnours in the Elite Men's race, followed by visiting New Zealander Éric Drower; coming in for strong third was Frédéric Buissières of Rocky Mountain/Business Objects, also from the Quebec region. In the Elite Women's race, Julie Sanders from l'Équipe Xprezo grabbed the gold, Anne-Marie Jobin of Team Xclusiv slid in for silver, and Caroline Villeneuve from Brunet-La Vie Sportive for brashed in for bronze.

In the Junior Men's race, Alex Harvey of Devinci took the top step of the podium, flanked by David Fournier of Lessard Bicycles (2nd), and Maxime Laflamme of Devinci (3rd). The Junior Women's podium saw Émilie Beaumont of Cyclone d'Alma in first, Alexandra Hamelin Gélinas of Cycle Outaouais in second place, and Mary-Claire Poitras of Sportf Bromont in third place.

The weather chilled some participants into staying in bed; 700 were expected yet 515 of the bravest showed up at the start line - an increase in participation over years past.

Riders were the Club Cycliste de Charlevoix numbered in the thirties; amoung them, Antoine Dufour-Simard who finished 4th in the Cadet Men race, and Ismael Dufour-Simard who won his first Canada Cup points finishing 15th in his category of 31 racers.

The next rendez-vous for the Club Cyclistes de Charlevoix is la Coupe Charlevoix, a regional mountain bike race to be held August 12. See you there!
