Éric Boily and David Veilleux Finish In the Top 30 at Toona

Quebecois cyclists Éric Boily (Équipe du Québec) and David Veilleux (Équipe du Québec) took the 25th and 27th places respectively this Thursday in Stage Four’s 96.6 K road circuit race of the Tour de Toona in the suburbs of Hollidaysburg, PA.

Dominique Perras (Équipe du Québec), who spent much of yesterday’s stage in a break-away with Glen Chadwick (Navigators Insurance), said he’s got a lot of leg left for the remaining stages and finished 31st in today; boosting Team Quebec’s profile.

Boily, Veilleux and Perras all crossed the line with an 11 second delay from the lead peleton of 20 riders. The top 20 broke away sprinting on a false flat just before the finish.

Despite the presence of his professional team KodakGallery-Sierra Nevada, Perras preferred to race under Team Quebec colours in order to help develop the next generation of cyclists; namely Boily and Veilleux. “We were in a good position for the sprint. Eric and Davis are our best sprinters so I brought them up to the front for the last K of the race.” Perras explained. “When the sprint started we were in seventh or eighth place. It’s a lot of fun to work with these younger guys; they are living their first pack sprints in a peleton of this caliber.” Perras is still planning on a stage win, citing Saturday’s road race as his best bet.

In the General Classement, the highest placing Quebecois is Mathieu Roy (Équipe du Québec) in 47th place; Perras sits in 59th, while Veilleux occupies the 90th place, two places ahead of Boily. In the teams classing, Équipe du Québec sits in 12th overall, only 33 seconds from number one ranked team, Colavita.

In the women’s race, Montréalaise Anne Samplonius (Biovail), took 7th place in today’s stage and occupies the 11th place in the General Classement. Fellow Québécoises Julie Marceau (Équipe du Québec) and Émilie Roy (Équipe du Québec) finished 28th and 29th respectively. Marceau, in her first Team Quebec project, has been causing a positive stir with her current placing of 15th in the GC.
