Along with his 10th place finish in Stage Four of the Tour of Utah Thursday, Canada's Dominique Perras (KodakGallery/Sierra Nevada) made a leap in the General Classement; going from 28th to 8th place overall. Perras is 2 minutes 46 seconds from the new race leader, American Jeff Louder (Health Net). Scott Moninger (Health Net) won the stage of 112 K in Nebo, Utah, which was crowned by an important 30 K ascention to the finish line.
"I followed several attacks and with 25 K to go a group of 4 riders - Glen Chadwick (Navigators), Burke Swindlehurst (Navigators), Jeff Louder and Scott Moninger ˆgot away.‚ explained Perras, who kept the group in sight while riding with yellow jersey holder Chris Wherry (Toyota United). "At 3 K to the finish, I accelerated to break away, but I was caught with 200 metres to go while sprinting for the fifth place." Perras finished the stage at 1 minute 34 seconds of winner Moninger.
As a result of Thursday's racing, Perras is in a prime position to achieve a top five finish in the Tour of Utah, scheduled to finish this Saturday.
"I'm rather happy with my racing today. For sure its a little annoying to be caught so close to the end, but all in all I feel good and confident. I am aiming to finish in the top five of the GC which I feel is realistic, especially considering how hard Saturday's stage will be."
Saturday's Stage features three climbs and Québec Native Perras has two elements working in his favour ˆhe excels in hilly races, and his position in the GC is high enough to allow him improve his ranking even more, without being a target.
"A big battle is shaping up between Health Net, Navigators and Toyota-United, but as for me, all I need to do is make sure I take my chance. Additionally, the teams here only have six riders, which makes controlling the pack a lot harder for the team whose has the yellow jersey. Toyota United is already under quite a bit of pressure, as two of their riders are in the first and second place in the GC."
The penultimate stage of the Tour of Utah is a 60 K road race in Salt Lake City.
