HP Extends Sponsorship on Women's Challenge
BOISE, Idaho, Nov. 5, 1998 -- Hewlett-Packard Company today announced an agreement to retain title sponsorship of the International Women's Challenge cycling race through the year 2000 and to change the name to "HP LaserJet Women's Challenge."
The event, in its 16th year, attracts the best female riders in the world to the United States to compete for a prize purse of $125,000, the richest in the Western Hemisphere for road cycling.
The 1999 event will be held from June 9 to June 20 in southwest Idaho in 13 stages over 12 days, covering 693 miles and 13,870 vertical feet, making it the longest race on the Union Cycliste Internationale North American schedule. The race will include three time trials; two closed-circuit races; and eight road races, one with a total climb of more than 3,000 feet. Last year's competition attracted the highest-ranking UCI field in women's cycling history, including Jeannie Longo of France, a 12-time world champion.
"Women's cycling is taking off in terms of popularity and the level of competition," said Canadian Linda Jackson, the 1998 event champion. "The HP LaserJet Women's Challenge is the most challenging cycling event on the North American continent and the best stop on the circuit."
"We're happy to provide more resources to women's cycling, particularly at this critical training juncture before the Olympic Games," said Doug Johnson, general manager of the HP LaserJet Supplies Operation. "These athletes are much like the HP team: They give their all to perform at the highest level and use technology and teamwork for success."
As title sponsor, HP will commit financial support as well as provide HP LaserJet printers and supplies, Internet-site development and electronic "fan mail" capability to the race organizers. HP has been the title sponsor of the event for the last two years and has provided training assistance and team sponsorship for American and international riders. Information about HP and the event can befound on the World Wide Web at http://www.hpiwc.com.
