New Track Planned for Victoria
Later today there is scheduled to be an official announcement of land being set aside for the building of a track facility in Victoria, B.C. The current track - a legacy of the 1994 Commonwealth Games - is to be torn down to make way for a soccer stadium. The current track has been underused since the Games, mainly because it does not meet many of the criteria for Track World Cups or World Championship events (particularly the lack of a tunnel for infield access). The new site is scheduled to be close to the existing site, with a BMX track also to be built. At this time it is only land that is being provided, so funds will still have be secured to build the track (which will be covered and have a tunnel).
