National `Cross Championships Info Update

1. The Development Committee discussed the topic of National Championship medals and jerseys (for national championship categories) at their recent meeting. Medals must be distributed in the following manner: a gold medal shall be given when there are a minimum of two finishers per category; a gold and silver medal will be given when there are a minimum of three finishers per category; and a gold, silver and bronze medal will be awarded when there are a minimum of four finishers per category.

In every national championship category in which there are a minimum of five finishers and three provinces a National Champion shall be declared. A jersey will be given to the winner in this case. Should this minimum requirement not be met in any other national championship category the winner of the category will have the option to buy a jersey but only if there were a minimum of 2 finishers in that category. Athletes should contact the CCA office by phone or e-mail.

2. This year the CCA has relaxed the rules governing the type of bike permitted for the national cyclo-cross championships. Riders may use any bicycle, road, 'cross or MTB with NO RESTRICTIONS.

It's that time again - trail maintenance is calling. And fall is a wonderful time to get your feet wet (pardon the pun) with the process if you're new to the sport. You know it's good for your karma, you've been wanting to take part and NOW'S YOUR CHANCE.

Saturday November 21....10:00AM - Burrard Thermal Generating Plant, Belcarra. Meet at the top of the hill in front of the yellow gate (more detailed directions below). Bring: rain gear, BOOTS, waterproof work gloves, snacks and water and any useful tools you might have (wheelbarrows, picks, rakes, shovels and cutting tools are all important). Dean and Sebastien of EMP will be leading the brigade and much path clearing, rerouting and drainage will take place. Phone 327-2547 for more information. Thanks for your support!

To Belcarra from Vancouver: take Hastings St east to the end and follow the Barnet Highway to Port Moody. At the end of the highway, turn left on St Johns St through Port Moody about 4 km. Watch for and take the left turn lane to Belcarra, Anmore, Buntzen Lake, etc. Take the second left Ioco Rd, at the second lights again following the same signs. Follow Ioco Rd about 5 or 6 more km until the right turn marked Belcarra, Anmore, etc. At the fork take the left fork to White Pine Beach, Belcarra. Go past White Pine Beach, down the hill and take the left fork to Belcarra Regional Park/Burrard Thermal Plant. At the next fork, bear left to the top of the hill with the double gates. Park and Work!

Industry News

- Interbike, the bicycle trade show producer has dropped their Philadelphia show and has, instead, announced an open-air 'Expo' in New Jersey. The announced dates are September 26th and 27th, making them, once again, in direct conflict with the planned dates for the Canadian trade show in Toronto. Since Interbike couldn't move the dates for their western show later (it is scheduled for September 10-13 in Las Vegas), this appears to be an attempt to scoop the CABDA show in Chicago - less than a week later. Whatever the reason, the image of an 800 pound gorilla comes to mind...

- Brunswick, manufacturers of the Mongoose line, has decided to dissolve their Canadian distribution agreement with Paris Glove of Canada. No word on exactly how distribution will take place after the transfer (Paris is currently shipping early season booking orders), but retailers we spoke with are nervous that Brunswick may be intending to introduce the Mongoose line to 'big box' chains such as Walmart and Toys R Us (as they have already done in the U.S.).

- Canadian Cyclist has reached an agreement with BTAC (Bicycle Trade Association of Canada) to produce bicycle retailer and consumer statistical surveys for the Association and its members. The surveys will provide information on consumer and retailer trends and predictions.
