Euro News

Junior World Road Champion Mark Scanlon of Ireland has signed with the Rabobank amateur team.

The French Cycling Federation has suspended two of the Festina team officials at the centre of the Tour de France doping scandal. Willy Voet, the masseur who was caught crossing the French border with a car full of banned substances, has been suspended for 3 years, and team Directeur Sportif Bruno Roussel for 5. Both men have launched appeals.

UCI Commissaire's Course

The UCI will be holding an International Mountain Bike Commissaire's Course in the Philippines next spring. The instructors will be two Canadian commissaires - Marie-France Bernier and Pierre Blanchard. The dates are April 15th to 18th, and if you want to apply to attend, it must be through the national federation (ie, the CCA). Spaces are limited to 30, and the deadline for applications by the federations is February 15th, so get moving!

Sydney Olympics

The IOC (International Olympic Committee) and UCI have released the numbers for how many athletes will be allowed in the cycling events at the 2000 Olympics. In Road events there will be a total of 212 (155 men, 57 women); Track will have 188 (154 men, 34 women); and Mountain Bike 80 (50 men, 30 women). Also of note is the fact that minimum ages have been increased: riders must be at least 18 years old for track events and 19 for road and mountain bike.
