PEI Women's Stage Race Officially Launched
The Confederation Bridge along with the World Cup Cycling Organization are joining forces on a 3 year commitment and are pleased to announce that a new women's elite Tour sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale will be presented on Prince Edward Island from June 10 to 14, 2007.
Tour de PEI is a 5 stage tour that will include a time trial event on the Confederation Bridge.
"2007 marks the 10th anniversary of the Confederation Bridge and we know of no better way to celebrate this milestone than to host this world class event!" stated Michel Le Chasseur, General Manager of Strait Crossing Bridge Limited. "We are pleased to be associated with Mr. Daniel Manibal and his team who have successfully presented a similar event in Montreal for the past 9 years. Winner of many awards in Tourism, Mr. Manibal and his team provide unparalleled assurance of a high quality world class event."
Mr. Manibal stated he is more than pleased to be part of the organization of the Tour de PEI, "I feel that the Tour de PEI will become one of the great UCI International Tours because of the exceptional courses and the great support of all the partners."
The Government of Prince Edward Island and the Government of Canada along with the cities of Summerside and Charlottetown are all partners in this undertaking. The Honourable Philip Brown, Minister of Tourism for Prince Edward Island noted, "Tour de PEI, the Island's first International Women's Cycling Event, will market Prince Edward Island internationally and while promoting the Island, it will promote the benefits of physical activity as well." He added, "The Government of Prince Edward Island is very pleased to support Tour de PEI as we celebrate the 10th year of operation of the Confederation Bridge."
The program is as follows:
June 10: Summerside Circuit
June 11: Confederation Bridge Time Trial
June 12: Stage Race from Cavendish National Park going West
June 13: Stage Race from Cavendish National Park going East
June 14: Charlottetown Criterium
A concert will take place at the Confederation Centre of the Arts at the close of this exciting event. In addition, satellite events such as amateur races and kid's sprocket races will take place prior to some of the stages.
