UCI Changes Qualifications to Participate in Mountain Bike World Cup Events

The UCI has released participation rules for Mountain Bike World Cups in 2007. In plain language, what the rules say is that riders who obtained at least 20 UCI points the previous year (in the appropriate event - cross-country, downhill or 4-cross) can enter World Cups. Also, riders who obtain UCI 20 points in the current year, riders on UCI registered teams (up to 10) or riders riding as part of a national team (up to six) are all eligible to start.

• Obtaining a minimum of 20 UCI points in a specific UCI MTB classification of December 31st of the previous year for the event in question (XCO, DHI, 4X)

• Obtaining, during the current season, a minimum of 20 UCI points in the reference's classification applicable for the qualification in the UCI MTB World Cup event in which the rider wishs to participate. UCI MTB teams and National teams benefit from an extra participation quota and are allowed to enter, in addition to the riders fulfilling one of the above mentioned conditions, a certain number of riders according to the details below:

• Riders belonging to a UCI MTB team: a maximum of 10 riders per format (XCO, DHI, 4X) is allowed to start

• Riders belonging to a National team (in National outfit): a maximum of 6 riders per event (XCO, DHI, 4X) are allowed to start.

Note: This rule does not apply to UCI Mountain Bike Marathon World Cup events

The UCI has also announced that Canberra, Australia will be the site of the 2009 World Championships.
