Bob Andrews won a tough Frozen John Roubaix, Sunday, on the snowy roads at minus 9 degree temperatures. He edged out second place Pat Ferris by three bike lengths in the sprint. Dean Lowry was third and Barb Polehoykie 4th.
Six hardy riders started this second stage of the Roubaix Cup Series on snowy roads with passable traction. The main race was three laps of a 5 km circuit that featured a steep and slippery 13% grade to climb.
Bob Andrews put up a 10 second lead after the first lap, with Series leader Pat Ferris chasing and Dean Lowry not too far behind them both. Pat would catch Bob on the slippery hill each lap, but Bob would rebuild his short lead by lap end.
On the final lap Bob Andrews had a fall on the hill and Ferris caught him, with the two coming together at the finish. Bob Andrews easily won the sprint after a slip or two in the snow. Their time for the 15 km race was 37:46.
Dean Lowry was third at 37:56 and Barb Polehoykie 4th at 44:56. Ken Nix had 33:08 for the 2 lap event and Rod Lewis 13:32 for the 1 lap.
Pat Ferris is the series leader with 9 points followed by Bob Andrews and Barb Polehoykie tied for second at 5 and Gord 'The Hammer' Harris third with 4.
The final Roubaix Cup race is next Sunday at the Baldonnel School at 2 pm.
