Flora Glo Island Cup XC #1 Hartland Bike, Victoria BC
Courtesy Oak Bay Bikes, Victoria
Seventy racers made their way out to the first Flora Glo Island Cup XC race this weekend at the Hartland Bike park in beautiful Victoria BC. The weather was perfect for racing and the rain held off till all the racers were in from the course.
The race was run as a time trial again this year, allowing people to compare their times against those of some of Canada's top MTN bike racers. Just like last year it was Max Plaxton (Rocky Mountain/ Haywood) laying down the fastest time on the technical singletrack course. He covered the 10km gnarly course in 30:59. His time was 18 seconds faster than his team mate, and 2006 runner up, Seamus McGrath.
Rounding out the top three was Oak Bay Bikes own Mat Hewitt ripping it his new Norco in 33:43. Drew Mackenzie (Team Torquay) and Sunshine Coast wonder kid Matt Cottrell (AviaWest/Rocky Mountain Bikes) rounding out the top five in the expert men's class.
In the women's race it was local lady Trish Sinclair (Scott Bikes) taking out a hard training Wendy Simms (Kona/ Les Gets) for first place. Sinclair's time of 44:29 was nearly a whole 5 minutes faster than Simms' time of 49:08. Simms was visibly tired after her effort and was quick to consult her coach about how many raspberry cream cheese tarts she was able to consume for recovery. Annie Gornall (Simon's Cycles Comox) was third in 49:49.
In the Intermediate class Dan Scott (Oak Bay Bikes) took top honours on his new Niner 29er in a smoking time of 42:09. Dan Diedrickson (Nanaimo Cycling Club) took 2nd with 45:34 and Port Alberni's Daryl Chase (Ozzy's Cycle/ AVR) in 45:49.
Kjerston Lone (Dirty Girls/ Loeka Clothing / North Park Bikes) has been training with coach Steve Lund on the road lately and even though she came across the line covered in mud form a couple of spills, she managed to squeak into the top spot in Intermediate women with a time of 52:16.
Marko Ravlic (AviaWest) took first in Beginner men in 57:32 and Wedgewood's Sarah Stewart took Beginner Womens in 56:18. As soon as the racing ended the rain came pouring down in true West Coast fashion. Racers enjoyed a BBQ provided by Oak Bay Bikes owner and BBQ master of cerimonies Karl Ullrich. A big thanks goes out to Mike and Linda Walsh (www.raceday.ca) for the great timing, Norco Bikes for the deadly draw prizes, the dainty ladies from the Oak Bay Bikes women's road team for the organized registration, and SIMBS for keeping it real and keeping it legal.
Race Notes:
Big props to Mat Hewitt on his third place finish. While Plaxton and McGrath are Pro riders with contracts and massage appointments, Hewitt is not only a family man with a wife and baby, but also an over worked and underpaid Intern MD. How does he do it? Genes.
Wendy Simms was second in the TT but she logged the most miles that day. She rode her road bike from Nanaimo, over the Malahat to the Dump and was late for her start jumped on her Kona dually and was off...nice work keener.
2006 Masters Cyclocross Champ Norman Thibault still hasn't recovered from organizing the Nationals last fall and was a bit 'off the back'. Apparently his Wife (Ms. Simms) is dragging him around training so that may have something to do with his lack lustre performance.
There was a tie for 12th place between Olympic Wrench Troy "Woody" Woodburn (Pro City Cycles) and Master Mechanic Curtis Saunders (Oak Bay Bikes). Troy was awarded 12th as he looked faster with his red roadie shoes covers.
Freddy Bussieres was out on his new ride. A single pivot Canadian built Xprezo is his new rig. Aluminium front end with a sweet 4130 Steel swing arm.....Tres sweet.
