2007 Ontario Track Championships
The Forest City Velodrome is getting geared up for our largest event of the year. The 2007 Ontario Track Championships will start on Friday night June 1st at 7 p.m. and continue through Sunday June 3rd.
Three new categories have been added to the Championships. The Sport Racer and Youth Categories were added to give our Velo-Kids and Recreational riders an opportunity to participate in a Championship event. Many of our riders will be getting into racing for the first time, so in an effort to keep everyone safe the Sport and Youth racers will be competing in timed events: 500m, 1000 m and 2000 m. These types of races introduce new riders into what it takes to progress in the sport. Also new in 2007 will be a Cadet Category for boys and girls between the ages of 12 and 15 who have experience in mass start races on the velodrome. The Juniors, Elite Men, Elite Women, Master 1 Categories will have four new races to consider.
On-line registration is available at the Ontario Cycling Association web site - www.ontariocycling.org.
New Velo-Kids Wanted!
Ask any Velo-Kid and they'll tell you that riding the velodrome is a blast. Like skateboarding or snowboarding. And you can learn to ride the track too.
Every Saturday from 4 pm to 6 pm, the velodrome offers the Velo-Kids program for kids under 16 years old. Kids start on the infield oval and as their confidence and skills increase they progress to the track oval. It's bicycle riding without having to worry about cars and traffic.
