Mississauga Midweek Tuesday Night Races #3

Temperatures were cool and the atmosphere was electric before tonight's Midweek races. One may as well have been at a heavyweight fight. There's a certain tension that arises from the remote but very real possibility that tonight a man would be beaten to within an inch of his life; even if it is metaphorically.
The early race would be taken in a sprint by NASCAR-aficionado turned bike racer Ricky Meloff (La Bicicletta) following spirited riding by Midweek CC's Liza Miranda and Martin Davis who was plugged into the Juvenation machine all night.
The Late Race would start flat out with multiple attacks. Not a move would stick until with twenty laps to go Chain Reaction's Paul Greene would launch an attack with Heath Cockburn (La Bicicletta). The two worked well together, but the pressure of holding off the pack at speeds over 45 kph would take their toll and the move would be reeled in by the tentacles of the hungry pack.
Cockburn would launch again with 8 laps to go with Chris Freeland of the emergent Cycle Solutions squad, but that too would be brought back.
With three laps to go Cockburn once again broke free. Snorting and stomping around the course like an angry bull Cockburn opened up a 10 sec. lead, then doubling it on the next lap before cruising in 7 seconds ahead of the sprinting pack to take his first Tuesday night win of the season. Robert Chiocca of Team Jamis would take the field sprint just behind. When asked about the training plan that led to his new found sprint speed he replied with only the cryptic phrase : "Wax on, wax off".
Thanks to Invita bike shop for providing a sprint prime with two laps to go which was won by Adrian Jackson (Wheels of Bloor). Additonal primes were provided by the Midweek Club.
Next week the early race will be a 20 km points race and the Late race will be the first of four MCOR CASH Points races. Start times are 6:45 and 7:15 pm respectively.
Thanks to Dan Rothinie, Alan Forde and Craig Fagan for set up and marshalling during the race and to Michelle Payne for help at the registration table and to Hein Wick for his expertise in operating the lap counter.
