Symmetrics Partners with BC Hydro Power Smart

Canada's number one pro cycling team Symmetrics Pro Cycling is pleased to announce their partnership with BC Hydro Power Smart. After the entire team volunteered for BC Hydros LED bicycle-powered billboard event last November, both BC Hydro and Symmetrics quickly realized they had something in common: power.

"We knew about BC Hydro's commitment to providing reliable power, and specifically Power Smart, before we volunteered last winter," Symmetrics CEO and race team co-owner Mark Cunningham said. "Energy conservation is critical as we all move to a greener society. The bicycle billboard campaign was a perfect way for the Power Smart team and Symmetrics to get to know each other. Our values were clearly aligned, and the fact that we both love to monitor our power consumption made the partnership a perfect fit.

Symmetrics has always believed strongly in community involvement and believe that the bicycle represents an environmentally friendly mode of transportation. BC Hydro is one of North America's leading providers of clean, renewable energy, and is the largest electric utility in British Columbia, serving 94 per cent of the province's population. Both organizations see the partnership as an opportunity for the public to see the link between cycling, energy and power.

Almost all of the riders on Symmetrics Pro Cycling use power meters to help monitor their training. Riders like recent US Open Cycling Championship winner Svein Tuft can push just under 500 watts for 20-30 minutes! Since BC Hydro is committed to providing reliable power, at low cost, for British Columbians, the company was happy to involve themselves in Symmetrics eventual goal of reaching the Olympics.

Symmetrics Pro Cycling is dedicated to helping ensure not only the success of its own team and athletes, but Canadian cycling in general. As part of this new partnership with BC Hydro, the team was also instrumental in pairing BC Hydro with the Tour of Gastown, Canada's premier cycling event. BC Hydro will join the Tour of Gastown as the presenting sponsor of an event which hosts many of North America's best cyclists.

"One of the ways we will reach the cycling community is through the largest racing event in the Lower Mainland, the Tour de Gastown, on July 18, 2007, where the Symmetrics team will be out in full force." Lopez said.
