100 Mile Ride to Cure Diabetes

Charity Event Is Part of the Ride to Cure Diabetes Organized by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF)

"I could possibly change the life of one person suffering from diabetes, and that would be enough for me" says Johnathon Ruiter, an 18 year old Type 1 Diabetic who will be riding in the 100 Mile Trial to Cure Diabetes. This unique charity event, organized by Core Cycle and the community of students and staff at John F. Ross C.V.I. in Guelph, Ontario is part of a larger event called the Ride to Cure Diabetes organized by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).

Johnathon Ruiter will be riding in Sonoma, California on June 23, 2007 on the epic 100 mile ride. He is an athletic young adult who has never ridden on a road bicycle before and has been training vigorously in preparation for the 100 Mile Trial to Cure Diabetes. After participating in an extensive custom bicycle fitting at Core Cycle, David Greisman, President of Core Cycle joined forces with Serotta Competition Bicycles, designing and donating a custom Coeur D'Acier frame and fork to Johnathon, allowing him to train and participate in this 100 mile ride in maximum comfort and efficiency.

The 100 Mile Trial to Cure Diabetes team members are Johnathon, Andrea Geddes-Barnes and 69-year-old Charlie Barnes, who has committed himself in endurance races to raise money until a cure is found. Both Andrea and Charlie received custom bicycle fittings at Core Cycle, helping them transform their riding experience in preparation for this event. The 100 Mile Trial participants will share the road with 250 other cyclists from around the world, raising funds in support of the JDRF.

Johnathon comments: "My participation in the 100 Mile Trial to Cure Diabetes, is my way of giving something back to all of those people whom I have relied on in these past 12 years of my life. Also, I would like to be somebody who is looked up as an example by other young diabetics. By helping to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation through this ride, I could possibly change the life of one person suffering from diabetes, and that would be enough for me."

So, I can't imagine a better way to raise funds for a very worthy cause, than to do it while riding my bicycle. I needed to put that philosophy into practice now, not later, when it might be more convenient. Finding a cure for Type 1 diabetes is too important to wait. The 100 Mile Trial to Cure Diabetes is committed to raising $50,000 for the JDRF, which will provide resources to continue the essential research worldwide that will lead to a cure for Type 1 diabetes. The official "send off" launch with the riders will take place on June 18th, 2007 at John F. Ross C.V.I.
