Team Escape Velocity Community Night at UBC
Bring the Whole Family out to Experience a Children's Bicycle Roadeo and Exciting Road Racing at Thunderbird Stadium
Team Escape Velocity is proud to host the first annual World Tuesday Night Championships Community Night at the University of British Columbia's Thunderbird Stadium on August 7, 2007. The evening's events will include a fun kid's bicycle roadeo that will emphasize bicycle safety, handling skills and safe cycling in traffic. Escape Velocity will also hold the regular Tuesday Night races and have representatives on hand to explain the discipline of bicycle road racing to interested members of the community.
Escape Velocity has been holding the Tuesday Night races at UBC since 1989, Tobin Copley, Team Escape Velocity Membership Coordinator and Board of Directors member said. As a member of the UBC community, Escape Velocity would like to reach out to the new and growing residential community on campus to promote both safe and competitive cycling in Vancouver.
Escape Velocity organizes close to 30 races throughout the year, and the World Tuesday Night Championships (WTNC) is likely the best attended cycling event in Western Canada. The WTNC series consists of road races held on a short circuit around UBC's Thunderbird stadium Tuesday evening during the summer months, weather permitting. Race categories vary from novices to experts and professionals, including separate races for women. Although intended to be training races, competition in these races is intense and turnouts of close to 200 cyclists are not uncommon on a warm summer evening.
Part of Escape Velocity's mandate is to promote cycling in the community and encouraging young people to get involved in the sport, Copley added. Three of the four members of the Canadian National track pursuit championship team are members of Escape Velocity's youth development program (dEVo) and a number of our former cycling club members have gone onto North American and International professional cycling careers.
Team Escape Velocity would like to thank club sponsors Louis Garneau, Powerbar and La Bicicletta for supporting this event and providing prizes for the evening's events.
