Wendy Simms had a good race but the level of competition in the NW has moved up a notch and Wendy will be hard pressed to repeat her 2006 successes. She also crashed a the start, which did not help. 6 women stayed together for most the race with Simms attacking on a couple of occasions but could not shake the others off - Williams in particular would not let her go - they kept coming back up to her. In a sprint for the finish - Willams took it over Sarah Kerlin and Wendy Simms.
The men's race was exciting - Ryan Trebon and Barry Wicks did everything they could to shake off Christian Heule (Sui - Stevens) but he was not going to let them have it. He beat Trebon in a very tight sprint. Kabush was in the mix for 1/2 lap and than flatted - he was not happy. So instead he entertained the crowd in the beer garden on his last passage through and got a few drinks from the crowd to help him forget his misfortune. He looked in great form in the warm up and said he was feeling good and needed the intensity - that'll be for today's Rad Racing Gran Prix of Cyclocross in Lakewood WA.
Chris Sheppard was the best Canadian - his suspension ended 10 days ago and he has raced in two events so far - Thrilla in Manilla (Oregon MTB) and tonight. He is also racing tomorrow - he made some money tonight - he was 8th or 9th overall. Was looking good. The same old Chris - he's very happy to be back. Won't be at nationals though, as he can't leave the US until all his visa paperwork is in order.
There was a huge Canadian spectator base, for once I wasn't alone, many mtbikers came down for the day. Even from Nova Scotia - they made quite an appearance.
