VICTORIA - When race organizers looked to expand its landmark Mt. Tolmie Road Race and Bastion Square Cycling Grand Prix races, there was no other way to go but up.
That's why this year, as part of the Pacific Classic Stage Race, the Mount Doug Hill Climb will join the two races which have fast become the "must do" on the Canadian and international cycling circuit.
The inaugural Mount Doug Hill Climb is really quite simple. Riders go 1,500 metres straight up -and that's literally - Victoria's scenic peak.
"My car coughs when it makes this trip," says Sharon White, race media liaison. "For riders, most with closer ranges of gears on their bikes than their mountain bike counterparts, will find this climb a real challenge."
But White says it's not a challenge that should intimidate the novice racer or recreational rider. "Just take a few practice runs in the weeks before the race and enjoy the view when you reach the top," she said.
The hill climb starts at 6:30 p.m. on the 28th and features juniors, masters, unlicensed, pro and categories 1 to 5 for men and women.
The Mount Tolmie Cycling Road Race, May 29, is a shortened version of the 1994 Commonwealth Games course with laps up and over Mount Tolmie. Races start at 8 a.m. and continue until the elite men's and women‚s races start at noon. The Bastion Square Cycling Grand Prix, May 30 is a series of 800-metre laps (depending on race category) around Bastion Square. Races start at 8 a.m. and continue until the men‚s championships starting at 1:15 p.m.
Riders can also compete for stage race points by competing in all three races. Entry forms are available at bike shops and rec centres. The Pacific Classic is part of the BC Cup, the six-race series of the best road races in BC.
Past riders include Olympic medalists Alison Sydor and Brian Walton.

Mississauga Midweek Club Wednesday Night Criteriums
This was a hard night for everyone. Right from the gun, a four man break made up of Greg Borden and Tony Abramvicious (Schwinn), Chris Paton (Mississauga Volvic) and Rob Sule (Chain Reaction), formed at the front of the handicap group. This quartet steadily built up a lead for the next nine laps and eventually were a full minute ahead of the handicap pack.
Meanwhile, the bunch just couldn‚t seem to get it together and stayed almost two minutes back of the 3's for some time., despite a number of futile attempts to get a chase group going.
At last, on lap 13, a foursome detached itself from the scratch group. Matt Hansen (Jet Fuel), Don Zuck (Pavan), Matthias Schmidt and Jeff Hansen (Ital Pasta) started to chase down the 3's and within the next five laps caught and passed them. They then set about catching the original break who had by now lapped a bunch of stragglers and with 2 laps to go the top eight were together.
At the line, Don Zuck just failed to come around Matthias Schmidt but held onto second, with Chris Paton hanging on for third. The remaining members of the two breaks filled in the next five places. A second chase group: Peter Mazur (Kissena), James Wadden (Kiro) and Tom Cramegna (Mississauga), tried valiantly to catch the first quartet and came within eight seconds of pulling it off, but flagged in the final two laps and had to be content with 9th, 10th. and 11th. places.
Message to Grace: You said you would go out with Don Zuck if he won tonight. Go out with him anyway, he needs your sympathy for not winning!
