Tour de Dog Loop - Fredericton, New Brunswick

Report and results courtesy of Velo NB

The road cycling season got off to a great start Sunday, May 18th with the Tour de Dog Loop, a two part stage race in Durham Bridge, just north of Fredericton. The race gets its name from the number of large dogs along the road race course. The dogs are, for the most part, tied on, but their barking and obvious desire to join in the chase provides an added adrenaline rush for the racers.

Riders from NS and PEI joined the many NB riders in this great race. The first stage was an 11 km time trial held Sunday morning. The top time of the day was posted by Kristopher Barr of Bicycles plus in Halifax. He finished the hilly course in a time of 15:29. The top female time for the day was Fredericton's Kelly Murray of Radical Edge who posted a time of 18:41.

The second stage of the day consisted of the road race with distances varying from 36 km for the younger riders to 90 km for the open male category. The first start group contained the elite male, elite female, master male and junior male riders and it started with no mercy. A group of three - elite riders Lorenzo Caterini from Hub Cycles in Truro, and local favourite Adam Douthwright of Radical Edge plus hotshot young cadet rider, Stuart Wight of Mike's Bike Shop Cycling Club opened up a gap on the first small climb of the race and they never looked back. Widening their gap each lap, these three riders kept the chasing pack off for the whole race. Douthwright had a tumble off his bike in the feeding zone which left Caterini and Wight out in front. As Wight finished up his race at the 72 km mark, Caterini was left to solo home the final 18 km.

The second start group contained a large mix of categories including master and sport female, sport male, junior female and male and female youth categories. The sport male group was the largest category in the field and contained many young up and coming riders looking to earn a spot on their respective province's Canada Games teams. In the end it was NS rider Paul Goodyear narrowly beating PEI rider Todd MacKenzie for the top place in an exciting sprint for the finish.

The next cycling event in NB is the Woolostock 5 Mountain Bike Endurance Event, May 24 & 25 in Woolostock Park near Fredericton. Information is available at Velo.nb.ca
