Shocking news from Italy - race leader Marco Pantani has failed a hematocrit bloodtest early this morning and is out of the race. Pantani, along with a number of other riders had his hematocrit level tested in the early hours of the morning and tested at 52%. Under UCI regulations, anything over 50% requires an immediate suspension of the rider for 15 days - for health reasons. Pantani's Mercatone Uno team mates have pulled out, and second place rider Paolo Savoldelli has refused to don the pink leader's jersey. Today's stage, the penultimate stage of the Giro, was is considered to be one of the most difficult, going over the famous Gavia Pass, and Pantani was expected to shine.
