SC REDA - Baggioni's Giuseppe Bracci won the Giro del Cigno, a 155km elite/espoir road race, in commanding style on Sunday, in a three man sprint. The small finishing group formed by selection over the final 20km climb, from a 16-man breakaway born in the first quarter of the event. The sixteen riders held the main field at bay for over 100km, through wind, heavy rain, and fog (which on one descent had visibility down to twenty meters), until it was apparent that they would stay clear. Of the 150 starters, only 20 would finish...21 if you include the guy with the hairy legs who got dropped after 10km, then later rode into the finish without a speck of dirt on his clothes or bike!
I finished 12th. I helped motor "Beppe" Bracci and the break towards the finish, but got shelled midway up the final climb. All in all it was a good race, and it is great to see hard work pay off in a victory!
Paul Kelly.
