Impressive Canadians (by Kevin Field) Just thought I'd drop you a line to let you know about an impressive Canadian showing at the Sugarbush Vt. Wicked Witch of the East Route 66 Mtb. races this past weekend. I accompanied Bill Hurley (Schwinn, winner of 2 Canada Cup XC events this year), Marc Cousineau (Schwinn), Julian Hime (Kona) and David Irving (OGC-Gary Fischer) as they warmed up for this weekends National Championships in Hardwood Hills. The weekend got off to a start with the Gary Fischer Short Track Dirt Crit. Hurley won by a tire width from Saturn's Mark McCormack (who is leading the Route 66 series) 3rd place went to Julian Hine. (Kona) and 5th. was Marc Cousineau (Schwinn). Sunday in the XC the boys really shined. From the gun Hurley took off with Mark McCormack. By the end of Lap 1, Hurley and McCormack were still maintaining a lead with a chasing trio of Hine, Irving and Cousineau at 30 sec. All the other Americans were, at this point, out of the running. The race continued with Hurley and McCormack riding smoothly together, always about 30-40 sec clear of the Canadian trio until two laps to go when Hurley started attacking McCormack. It wasn't until the last lap that Hurley was able to put a significant gap on McCormack. Hurley won with a time of 1:38. McCormack crossed the line 55 seconds later. 4:03 behind Hurley, Hine and Irving sprinted in for third and fourth respectively. 25 seconds further back Cousineau cruised in for fifth, putting 4 canadians in the top 5. Quite a show. Watch for all these guys in Hardwood Hills this weekend. FYI: after the xc Mark McCormack rode his bike up to Burlington Vt. and came second in the Howard Bank Criterium (i m p r e s s i v e) he lapped the field with Kevin Monaham (Breakaway N.Y.) and Czeslaw Lukaszewicz. Anyway, Lukaszewicz ended up third and TO Italia rider Damian Mathews was fifth. John Harris was up there too, not sure of his placing though. More Norba Results In the men‚s National series race at Snoqualmie, Washington, in addtion to Kirk Molday‚s win and Roland Green‚s 4th, Canadians Seamus McGrath and Peter Wedge finished 7th and 8th respectively. Chrissy Redden suffered a flat while among the frontrunners, dropping to last place. She managed to pass 47 riders after fixing the puncture to end up 15th.
