Canada will be represented by a strong team on the road and track at the Pan Am Championships in Chihuahua, Mexico, from May 8th to 15th, 2009.
The track team is coming off a successful training camp and Pan Am Trials in Los Angeles that took place the beginning of April. They are motivated for strong performances on the track in Chihuahua where Canadian athletes will be competing in all the events on the velodrome.
Monique Sullivan (AB) is coming off of her first World Championships last month and will represent Canada in the sprint events. She will be joined by Laurie-Anne Dupont Renaud (QC) in the sprint events. Stephanie Roorda (BC) and Lisa Perlmutter (ON) will compete in the endurance events.
Lawrence Leroux (QC), Stephane Cossette (QC), and Joseph Veloce (ON), will compete in the team sprint with the intentions of standing on the podium. Jean- Michel Lachance (QC), Stephen Meyer (ON), Mark MacDonald (AB), and Matt Potma (BC) will represent Canada in the men’s endurance events.
The road team is capable of medaling in the road race and individual time trial. The urban race circuit through Chihuahua features a challenging 500m long climb with an average inclination of 15%. The conditions will be hot with a temperature around 40°C. The Elite and U23 men will race together for 169km and the women will race a distance of 90km. The ITT course is on a flat 19.5km circuit. The women will do one lap and then men will do two laps for a distance of 39km.
The elite women’s team includes two 2008 Canadian National Champions; Anne Samplonius (QC) in the elite ITT and Denise Ramsden (ON) in the junior road race. Both will be competing in the road race and ITT. Joanie Caron (QC) rounds out the team for the road race and is coming off a strong performance at the Canadian National Team training camp and Redlands Classic in March.
The elite men’s team features Cam Evans (BC) and Will Routley (BC) who will be competing in the road race and ITT. Charles Dionne (QC), Rob Britton (BC), Dave Vukets (ON) and Jamie Sparling (AB) round out the road race team. All have had an excellent start to the season and are excited to show their form at Pan Am’s.
The under 23 men features some of Canada’s top up and coming road cyclists. Joël Dion-Poitras (QC), Cody Campbell (BC) and David Boily (QC) will be in the hunt for the Pan American Champion’s U23 jersey.
According to Jacques Landry, Chief Technical Officer with the Canadian Cycling Association, “the Canadian Team will be looking to gather UCI points and by the same token offer our selected athletes a great development opportunity, so they are very motivated to get results at the Pan American Championships and they should be coming home with a handful of medals”.
