Pan American Games Team Announced

Ottawa, Ontario - July 7th, 1999 - The Canadian Cycling Association (CCA) is pleased to announce the Cycling Team that will represent Canada at the 1999 PAN AMERICAN GAMES, July 24th-August 8th in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

The 9 men and 6 women will compete in Road, Track and Mountain Biking disciplines. They are:

MEN
Doug Baron - Calgary, Alberta
Jim Fisher - Calgary, Alberta
Gord Fraser - Nepean, Ontario
Czeslaw Lukaszewicz - Chateauguay, Que.
Lars Madsen - St-Albert, Alberta
Seamus McGrath - Millgrove, Ontario
Chris Sheppard - Kamloops, BC
Brian Walton - North Delta, BC
Eric Wohlberg - Levack, Ontario

WOMEN
Lyne Bessette - Knowlton, Quebec
Tanya Dubnicoff - Winnipeg, Manitoba
Clara Hughes - Winnipeg, Manitoba
Linda Jackson - Nepean, Ontario
Mandy Poitras - Langley, BC
Alison Sydor - North Vancouver, BC

Based on published criteria, the CCA High Performance Committee made the selection of the team. The criteria are UCI ranking, 1998 World Championships results, World Cup results and National Championships results.

Well known on the North American and World cycling circuits, Canada‚s top riders will strive to be Pan American Games champions. Leading the pack, and all the Canadian athletes on opening day, is Winnipeg‚s own cycling champion Tanya Dubnicoff, double gold Commonwealth Games medallist in 1998. Joining Tanya in competition will be Linda Jackson, the 1998 Silver Commonwealth Games medallist, two-time Olympic bronze medallist Clara Hughes and Alison Sydor who is the current overall World Cup leader and a Silver Olympic medallist. A newcomer in competitive cycling to watch for is Lyne Bessette, who has won four major stage races in 1999.

On the men‚s side, Gord Fraser, who in 1999, is ranked the number one in the North American National Road Series will be striving for gold along with Olympic silver medallist Brian Walton, current national champion Czeslaw Lukaszewicz, and Gold and Bronze Commonwealth Games medallist, Eric Wohlberg.
