North Vancouver, BC - Montreal's Gary Longhi was a repeat winner this weekend at the 1999 Handisports National Cycling Championships claiming the national title in both road race and time trial events.
Longhi, competing in the cerebral palsy 5 km individual time trial, won with a time of 8 minutes, 50 seconds. Jean Quevillion (Ste-Adele) was second in 9:40, Paul Jalbert (Prince George) third in 9:48 and Carla Yuftak (Edmonton) fourth in 11:43.
In the 10 km tandem event, 1998 World silver medallists Brian Cowie (Burnaby) and pilot Min van Velzen (Vancouver) took the title in 13:38. Yvon Provencher (Montreal) and pilot Fabian Bergeron (Montreal) were second in 14:07; Julie Cournoyer (Montreal) and pilot Alexander Cloutier (Ste-Foy, Que.) were third in 14:10; Stefan Cote (Quebec City) and pilot Mathieu Fagnan (Montreal), fourth in 14:27; Richard Marsolais (Vanier, Ont.) and pilot John Large (Aylmer, Que.) fifth in 15:14; Gary Steves and pilot Gary Steves (Vancouver) sixth in 16:57; and Zaiedee Potter (Calgary) and pilot Jennifer Durrance (Calgary) seventh in 19:05.
Hosted by the PacificSport National Cycling Centre, the 1999 Handisports National Cycling Championships are key in the athletes' development and early preparation for the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, where athletes with a disability will compete for Olympic medals in cycling for the first time.
