Report and results from the K-Town Classic presented by Kelowna Cycle in Kelowna BC on June 13 & 14, 2009
The K-Town Classic presented by Kelowna Cycle was very fortunate to have a total of 221 racers competing in 6 categories over 3 stages this past weekend. This was an approximately 50% increase in participation over last year. Racers hailed from throughout BC, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Ontario and Washington state.
The new Tree Brewing Time Trial course proved to be a short but challenging route for all the racers. Nic Hamilton of the Trek – Red Truck Racing Team set the fastest time for the men with a 4:44 over the 2.4 km course. The fastest time for the women was set by Kelowna’s own, Allison Testroete, of the Total Restoration Cycling Team with a 5:36.
The Pandosy Village Twilight Criterium held on Saturday afternoon and evening was a highlight of the weekend’s racing. The festival-like atmosphere combined with aggressive racing over the downtown route in the heart of the Pandosy Village provided an entertaining evening of racing. In the men’s field, Tyler Trace (Trek-Red Truck Racing) was victorious in the 40 lap race that never let up from the start. On the women’s side, Allison Testroete of the Total Restoration Cycling Team was impressive again with her early break away that allowed her to stay ahead of the rest of the hard charging women’s field and win the race.
The always tough Southeast Kelowna Road Race was the second stop in the 5 race BC Cup series. The twisting and undulating route was a perfect stage to display all that Kelowna has to offer. It is also a perfect stage to display the fantastic abilities of the many cyclists who raced over the course on Sunday. As is typical on this course, the men’s and women’s fields were races of attrition and won by the strongest of the survivors. Justin Kerr (Liquid Fitness) added another road race win this weekend to his win in the first BC Cup race to retain the leader’s jersey in the race series. For the women, Allison Testroete of the Total Restoration Cycling Team proved to be unstoppable this weekend and added a win in the road race to complete a sweep of all 3 events in the stage race. Laura Brown of Local Ride took fourth place in the road race to retain her lead in the BC Cup series.
The men’s overall stage race was narrowly won by Tyler Trace (Trek-Red Truck Racing) over Justin Kerr (Liquid Fitness). The women’s overall stage race was won handily by Allison Testroete of the Total Restoration Cycling Team.
