July 15/09 13:11 pm - Cycle Solutions DH #5 Aids Awareness Race

What can I say the weekend went off great, a couple early showers on Saturday morning did little to quash the spirits of all 273 racers who turned out for the Super D Provincial Champs, DH #5 and of course fundraiser for the Stephen Lewis Foundation.

First and foremost just over $500 was raised for the Stephen Lewis Foundation, an organization committed to providing resources to small, front-line groups that make tremendously effective use of comparatively small amounts of money to fight AIDS in sub Saharan Africa.  The toonie toss into the basket of a Kona Africabike was the hit of the weekend, with prizes going out to all how landed a toonie in the basket.

When it got down to racing the best put it all on the line for the Super D provincial Championships.  A nice long course tested the lungs and skills of all the racers, we had a great course set up using Embryo (one of the best trails at Blue!)
here are some of the results.

Jacob Lacosse put down a smokin time winnnig by almost 1:10, nice work.  It was worth the drive from Thunder Bay!

18 and under Open
1 Jacob Lacosse (Thunder Bay), 9:27.363
2 Josh Buosi (Thunder Bay), 10:38.675
3 Dean Thompson (Sessions DH/The Bike Zone),  10:54.124

John Fisher continued his dominance of the Super D winning his 3rd race of the season.

19 - 29 Open
1 John Fisher (Cycle Solutions/Angry Johnny's Racing), 8:23.204
2 Michael Hermanovsky (Richmond Hill), 8:40.103
3 Tom Kakamousias (Silent Devinci), 8:46.928

Local Blue mountain instructor and retired elite racer Michael Towers took the 30+.

30+ Open
1 Michael Towers (Blue Mountain Racing), 9:21.545
2 Jeremy Schaab (Toronto), 9:32.670
3 Robert Sangers (Glenburnie), 9:32.814

The DH course was kept a heavily guarded secret with rumours flying for weeks as to what the selection would be.  We decided to try something new with some great technical sections and awesome high speed pedalling.  The result was the longest course in Ontario's history!

The youngest category put down some amazing times for this long course.  It was Jamie Tice who just took the win over local Matt Wilcox in 2nd, Deven Chilton a podium regular took a solid 3rd.

Minime
1 Jamie Tice (Cycle Solutions/Angry Johnny's Racing), 3:43.424
2 Matthew Wilcox (Collingwood), 3:43.937
3 Deven Chilton (Ancaster), 3:45.462

Kristen Courtney with a broken finger/wrist managed to pull out a solid 3rd, while Monika Luebke (Cycle Solutions) edged out enough to take 2nd place.

We had a superstar on hand yet again, Former National DH Champ Cassandra Boon (Sweet Petes) decimated the field by 40 seconds, her form had her thinking about the National Champs this coming weekend, will she do it???

Women Open
1 Cassandra Boon (Sweet Pete's), 3:36.689
2 Monika Luebke (Cycle Solutions/Angry Johnny's Racing), 4:05.339
3 Kristen Courtney (Brantford), 4:08.782

A great Junior Expert field had some super tight times with Alistair Pimlott (silent devinci) taking 3rd, only 1/10th ahead of him was Josh toohill.  However it was Factory Lapierre rider Robert Bailey (Lapierre Bikes) who would pilot his light DH 920 bike to first place by almost 3.5 seconds.

Junior Expert
1 Robert Bailey (Cambridge), 3:24.583
2 Josh Toohill (Elora), 3:27.808
3 Alistair Pimlott (Silent Devinci), 3:27.976

As the day wound down it was anybody's guess as to who would pull off the Elite men's podium, with some of the Pro's living local and riding the trails everyday would they easily take the win??? As it turned out one of the best conditioned racers Josh Decloet (Commencal) put down an amazing 3:15 for 5th place, with his teamate and local Taylor Rowlands (Commencal) just ahead of him for 4th.  Big guy Zach Tatem (Trek Store) put down all that power for 3rd with former national team member Rob Fraser (Primary Trek) edging him out by almost 3 seconds for 2nd spot.  But the shouts and cheers exploded as Mr. Canada Justin Brown (Cycle Solutions) put down a time nobody thought possible winning by over 4 seconds

Elite/Pro Men
1 Justin Brown (Cycle Solutions/Angry Johnny's Racing), 3:08.994
2 Rob Fraser (Primary-Trek), 3:12.547
3 Zachary Tatem (Trek Store Race Team), 3:15.285
4 Taylor Rowlands (Nottawa), 3:15.380
5 Josh DeCloet (Turkey Point), 3:17.366
