The Story:
Building on its past success, the Waterloo Cycling Club is pleased to open its 3rd annual "Cycle of Non-Violence" charity ride to other clubs and OCA members. This one day, sag-supported ride offers routes up to 225km+ and benefits Anselma House, a shelter for abused women and their children in the Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge region.
Born of a desire to exploit end-of-season fitness and camaraderie, our "big ride" began in 1997 and became a charity event in 2000, when 14 riders raised $5300 for this most worthy cause. In 2001 we shifted up a gear (both figuratively and literally) and gathered $7400, with 19 riders covering ~220km (and at 33.5kph too).
This year we also offer a shorter 100km option to encourage more people to try this outstanding adventure through Ontario and to raise even more for women and children in crisis. We dedicate a support van packed with food and drink to accompany each pace group for regular refueling stops and a break for a prodigious lunch.
Anselma House operates several "safe" houses offering several dozen beds for women and children. Average occupancy is 120%--they're sleeping on couches when they have to. The money our ride raises has been instrumental in keeping Anselma's children's programs running. A disturbing number of the children of abused women fall into abusive situations themselves later in life. Anselma is working to break that cycle, and we, with our own "cycle," are trying to help. Read more about Anselma House at www.anselmahouse.org.
Mark Sept 22 on your calendar and start collecting both miles and pledges. It's a great ride and a great cause.

Breathe Easy with BikeShare
The smoggy days of summer are here again. Fortunately the Community Bicycle Network's, BikeShare, is working to clear the air. Launched in May of 2001, BikeShare introduced the idea of a community bicycle sharing program to Toronto.
With the continued support of lead sponsor, Ontario Power Generation and help from the Toronto Atmospheric Fund, BikeShare continues building on the success of its first year with plans for this year to add eight new hubs and another eighty bicycles to the fleet. More bikes and more hubs, will make it even easier to get around town.
For $25.00 a year anyone can become a member. Visit 761 Queen St West and sign up. With a membership card you can go to any participating hub and borrow a bicycle for a few hours or a day.
The Community Bicycle Network's BikeShare program is proving to be a very popular program. It offers the choice of an environmentally positive and enjoyable form of transportation for commuters, visitors and those who just want an easy and affordable way to get around the city. With more cars, trucks and buses and smog days every year, BikeShare is important to the health and well being of the city.
"Last year was a great success with eighty bicycles and 250 members," said Derek Chadbourne, BikeShare Coordinator. "We are pleased that BikeShare is helping Toronto's air, and we are also pleased to be helping other cities launch their community bicycle lending programs." Within ten years BikeShare hopes to have a hub within a ten minute walk of anywhere in downtown Toronto.
The hubs include:
the Community Bicycle Network at 761 Queen St West
the Bike Joint at 290 1/2 Harbord
Grapefruit Moon at 962 Bathurst
Grassroots at 410 Bloor and 372 Danforth
University of Toronto Student Administrative Council at 12 Hart House Circle
Mountain Equipment Coop, 400 King St West
City Hall 100 Queen St. West
the 519 Church Community Center, 519 Church
Jet Fuel Cafe at 519 Parliament
Ideal Bicycles at 1178 Queen St East
During the winter the bicycles were taken off the road and the first BikeShare treasure hunt commenced. With only the missing BikeShare bikes on the road, cyclists had no problem hunting them down. Those who found a BikeShare bike were rewarded $25.00. Seven year old Kaleb Ferguson donated his money from the BikeShare bike he found to the Hospital for Sick Kids. The Toronto bicycle messenger community was instrumental in finding 70 per cent of the missing BikeShare bikes.
