Holiday presents arrived early at the Burnaby Velodrome this week with the introduction of ten 650c ‘small rider’ track bikes. National Team members and recent World Cup gold medal winners Steph Roorda and Laura Brown were in attendance, medals in hand, for the unveiling of the bikes. “It’s great to see the commitment and investment that the Velodrome has put into youth development with these new bikes and continued coaching support” said Roorda. Added Brown, “I see so many young riders being introduced to the track every week and having such a great time. It’s a fantastic step for cycling in Canada!”
Now even younger athletes can be introduced to the thrill of one of North America’s only indoor velodromes in a safe, exciting, and fun atmosphere. The bikes are specifically designed for smaller riders by having twenty-six inch wheels and more compact frame sizes.
The bikes are an integral piece to the expansion of the Youth and Junior cycling programs for the Burnaby Velodrome Club. Programs are run every Monday and Wednesday from 4-6pm and are led by certified Velodrome and Cycling BC coaches. The goal of the program is to introduce youth to the world of track cycling in a safe and fun atmosphere. The first three initial sessions are completely free including both bike rental and coaching.
