We have just learned that Ken and Betty Dales, the owners of Fontaine Sport and Cycle in Peterborough, Ontario (1968-1984), passed away as a result of a automobile accident on Christmas Eve. For a large contingent of the Peterborough area cycling community in the 1970's (including myself), Fontaine Sport and Cycle was where we got our start.
Personally, my first racing bike came from Fontaine (where I was allowed to pay for it in weekly installments). Mike Gorman (father of Charlie and Brendan, national Junior team members) worked at Fontaine for years, and other top riders such as Don Hodgson, Dave Pearce and Simon Ciceri all got their starts through Fontaine Sport and Cycle, and the Dales.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 30th from 7 - 9 pm at the Nisbett Funeral Home and Chapel, 600 Monaghan Road S., Peterborough (705) 745-3211. Funeral service will be held in the Nisbett Chapel on Thursday, December 31st at 11 am, with interment to follow at Rosemount Memorial Gardens. In memory of Ken & Betty, donations to Our Space Community Centre would be appreciated.
