January 19/10 11:22 am - Cheat or Cheated? A Debate on Gender Injustice in Sport

On Tuesday, February 2nd at 5:00 PM, Hart House Debates Committee & Debating Club at the University of Toronto will present an engaging student debate on whether or not gender testing is necessary in elite athletics and the Olympic Games.

This contentious debate has recently attracted media attention following South African runner Caster Semenya’s gold medal win. With the Olympic Games commencing shortly on Canadian soil, this timely and controversial topic will open and engage varied opinions as well as welcome sport sociologist Dr. Ann Travers to offer reflection and commentary on the broader issue of gender injustice in sport. The discussion will bring together academics, students, and community members to discuss and critique current challenges to full integration for many athletes in sport.

Dr. Ann Travers of Simon Fraser University is a leading expert on gender and sport sociology and will conclude the evening with a talk, drawing together points raised in the debate and comments from the floor, as well as reflecting on her paper: “The Sport Nexus and Gender Injustice.”
